Gerhard Heim
Pierre Janet’s current concepts in Cognitive Behavioural Therapies

Prologue

If a cognitive behavioural therapist should want to learn about the psychotherapy of Pierre Janet , one would recommend the following studies : 1st regarding the psychology of neuroses : “Les Obsessions et la psychasthénie” (1903). 2nd relative to therapy : “La médecine psychologique” (1923) or the chapter on treatment by excitation ( les traitements par l’excitation) in the third volume of “les médications psychologiques” (1919). 3rd concerning theory : his lessons on “La force et la faiblesse psychologique”(1932) and his contribution in the Encyclopédie Francaise entitled “ La psychologie de la conduite” (1938). These studies cover 35 years, but it should be added that from his beginnings Janet has given philosophical and methodological arguments for what is called today the cognitive behavioural approach in pathological psychology and psychological therapy.
Brooks (1998) has discussed the role of the “eclectic legacy” in French psychology (Ribot, Janet) and sociology (Espinas, Durkheim). He states that Janet, like Ribot , was a monist, who saw mind and motion as two aspects of the same reality, to be studied by the methods of natural science. But, in contrast to Ribot “Janet refused to invoke physiology to explain psychological phenomena” (p.180) , because this would be” premature” and “metaphysical”. Janet would have also argued “on methodological grounds that any act that normally requires conscious thought must be assumed to contain conscious elements, even if the subject is not aware of them.”(p.181). Thus he extended consciousness beyond habit and instinct to include even the regulation of the body’s physiological functioning. (...)

Hironobu Matsuura

Natalia Fedunina
My Janet. A story of investigation

Prologue

I know, this title doesn’t look like a title for a serious study or talk. And frankly speaking, I’m not going to deliver such a speech. Rather I’m going to share with you both my excitement and my failures concerning Pierre Janet, his theory and psychotherapeutic practice, as well as my nowadays aims of research.
Basically I was very much attracted and inspired by the combination of philosophy and medicine, by the possibility of combining clinical practice and general academic grasp, reflection on one’s experience. And actually this factor determined my choice of exploration and application of Janet’s theory.
I really was charmed by his books, both their contents and the way they were written, the very style of presenting the material. But you know, it’s not enough just to be charmed, well, at least in science. My first major aim was to make Janet known for my colleagues, both academic researchers and therapists. And to achieve it I wrote a dissertation, thesis on Janet, and several articles. But unfortunately that was far from being enough. The fate of dissertations is quite known. Millions of PhD dissertations are written annually in Russia, millions of them find their honorable place in the library. To make things even worse, history of psychology is usually being treated in Russia as something having to do with nostalgia, with remains of the past, with archeological ruins, which are good to be viewed as curiosities for 2 days before excavators will throw them away to replace them by a nice skyscraper, modern, convenient, up to date. (...)

Onno van der Hart
The influence of Pierre Janet’s views in the field of psychotraumatology

Introduction

Worldwide, the influence on Pierre Janet’s pioneering work is probably most recognized and visible in the field of psychotraumatology, in particular among scientists and clinicians who are interested in the relationship between trauma and dissociation. However, with his approximately 20,000 printed pages, Janet has so much more to offer to modern psychology and psychiatry, such as his dynamic psychology and his psychology of action. The Institut Pierre Janet, in particular its President, Isabelle Saillot, is doing wonderful work in bringing these largely unknown domains of knowledge to the foreground. Likewise, Serge Nicolas, one of the founding members of the Institut is wonderfully active in republishing Janet’s works in a series of inexpensive books through his publishing house, L’Harmattan. At the General Meeting of the Institut today, various speakers will testify to the wide range of subjects related to Janet which are of current interest. They come from France, Germany, Japan, Russia, the Netherlands, United Kingdom, and the United States, and represent the growing interest in Janetian studies worldwide.

In this brief report, I discuss a few trends and developments that took place in 2005 up to the present which relate to Janetian psychotraumatology research and clinical practice.

Paula Ann Monaha

Introduction

Isabelle Saillot
Bibliographie sur l’étude psychologique des sentiments, 1862 - 1922
